Reasons why many Filipinos have Spanish surnames

Perhaps some people are wondering why many Filipinos got Spanish surnames.

This article explains the reasons why it is like that.

REASONS WHY:

1. Native Filipino and Spanish intermarriages – Some Spaniards married native Filipinos especially during the Spanish Colonial Era.

2. Filipino and Mexican intermarriages — Spain ruled Philippines from 1565-1821 through Mexico thus there were many Mexicans in the Philippines during that time and some of them married native inhabitants.

There are still intermarriages that happens between Filipinos and Mexicans up to this day.

Modern Filipino-Mexicans and Mexican-Filipinos are known as Mexipinos or Filixicans to some.

3. Filipino and other Latin American intermarriages  – Some Filipinos married other Latin Americans beside from Mexicans.

4. The Claveria Edict of 1849 — That edict gave Spanish surnames to the natives in order to make taxation easy. A lot of natives don't have a surname before.

The natives selected their Spanish surnames through the Catalogo de Apellidos (Alpabethical Catalogue of Surnames).
